Zapped! - Project/Object Freaks Out Peasants Cafe

report filed 8/24/00 8:23 am EDT- Outstanding performance from Ike Willis and Project/Object the other night at Peasants! Anyone even remotely into the twisted musical creations of Frank Zappa will get off big time to this wild and wacky ensemble. First off, they have a great time on stage. Lots-o-laughin' going on... And it's in the Zappa tradition. Willis knows what that's all about. He played with Zappa for 14 years.

Humor was always a huge component of the Zappa charm. Known for his irreverent and articulate weirdness, Zappa's lyrics are notorious for their sexual charged imagery (can you say, 'Dynamo Hum?'), and razor sharp sociopolitical satire. Project/Object is true to that tradition. Look no further than the pink, lace frilled panties atop the head of the keyboard player, or the silky silver drawers dangling provocatively from the bass player's ax... P/O conjures the same sort of, "Ladies, you are encouraged to remove your underwear and bring it to the stage," sort of band/crowd interaction that Zappa, and his legions of, shall we say 'unique,' fans, held so dear.

Musically, Project/Object rules. Close your eyes and you're listening to Zappa. They are an awesome band...

Received an outstanding CD from out of the blue, sent to me by 'pedal' dobro guitarist Peggy Green. Sound interesting? It is. Wanna know more? Check out our review of Green's, The Songs of Naka Peida.

I reckon' that's about it this time. Oh yeah, almost forgot... looks like the Anytime/Anywhere studios will be rolling south after the Labor Day holiday for a few days, and then we'll be making the long trek up to New York, where we'll be setting up shop for a little while. Not exactly sure of the specifics at this point, but we will keep you posted as more information becomes available...

Right now the scuttlebutt around the water cooler is abuzz with excited anticipation for tonight's All Might Senators show at Peasants. Should be a funked up, booty fresh good time... and if all goes well, we'll have a few thoughts and images from that show next week, when our adventure in music journalism continues...
